The Dream Workplace Components: Daily Communication

In my previous post, we introduced the idea that the dream workplace exists.  There are a number of techniques you can use to build your dream workplace.  Last week we experienced the “Team Circle” through the eyes of an employee, Mike Learner.  This week, we’ll see the impact daily communication can have via this same employee:

The support of my Team Captain, Ann doesn’t begin and end at Team Circle. Almost every day she stops by my desk for a quick chat – a visit she calls a drive-by. Ann doesn’t only do drive-bys with me. She checks in with everyone on the team, and she always starts by asking us the same question:

“Do you have everything you need to achieve great results today?”

This morning when Ann came to my desk, I told her that I needed to talk to her about a sticky problem I’ve been having with a certain section of the financial report that I’m responsible for completing each month. As always, when one of us has a problem or concern, Ann responds with three questions that are designed to get us to a solution quickly and efficiently. She calls this line of questioning Coaching Conversations.

“Okay, tell me about the problem,” Ann said.

“Well, I’m not satisfied with the look of the Cost of Goods Sold report,” I replied. “There’s a lot of room for improvement. It’s confusing to read, and people don’t understand it, so I end upfielding a lot of questions every month. It’s not very user-friendly in its current format.”

Ann nodded. “What would you like the report to look like?”

“Simple, streamlined, and easy to read. Some graphs would be great too.”

“And how do you think you can make that happen?”

I then respond with offering to create some recommendations, but that it will take some time to create.  She offers her support and thanks me for being proactive in trying to make a process better.
